The Hybrid Experiment is back for 2017! This year, I am expanding the project to include hybrid art journaling.  For those of you not familiar with the hybrid experiment, it is an article series featuring tips and tutorials for getting digital scrapbook supplies out of your computer and onto the page. I began this series a few years back. Hybrid projects are a wonderful way to expand your library of supplies in a budget friendly manner. You also have the bonus of being able to buy what you need, when you need it, from the comfort of your own home without having to wait for it to be delivered.

This Month, I have a hybrid art journal page on the OScraps blog! It’s my first project as an Oscraps Creative Team member. The article features a 3 part video tutorial which will enable you to create a hybrid art journal page from start to finish. I share how I cut the embellishments and papers from the kit to use as collage elements. I then take you through the process of using various mediums to create the art journal spread.

The Bonus of Using a Digital Kit in your Art Journaling

Using digital kits has really helped push me forward in my art journaling. Digital products are a great starting point. I have a set color palette to play with along with a collection of ephemera. Digital elements within the kit can inspire what I choose to add to the art journal page from my physical stash.

Many of the kits come with word art. That along with the motifs of the digital kit often inspire what I want to create. It’s kind of like having a prompt to help start my page.I am not fond of my handwriting and I often don’t know what quote to use. The word art helps me move past both of those difficulties allowing me to get to the part of art journaling that I like the best…putting paint onto paper.
Printing my own die cuts allows me to choose the weight and texture of the paper. I can print the embellishments on glossy photo paper, transparencies, cardstock. watercolor paper or patterned paper from my scrapbook stash. I also can control the size and color of the embellishments and ephemera. I get full control of the finished look of the die cut which is something that is not easy to do with store bought ephemera.
I use my Silhouette Portrait machine to cut my own die cuts. After punching out the shapes, I am left with a ready made stencil to use in my art journal.
I am looking forward to really coming into my own with art journaling in 2017. I have dabbled in it over the past two year but not really felt brave enough to share my pages or my experience with it. Hybrid art journaling is one of the things that made me feel more confident. It has sparked my desire to learn more and practice with many different mediums. Would you like to join me? It is really easy to print and cut items from digital scrapbook kits for your art journal pages. Find out just how easy it is! Hop on over to Oscraps to see the tutorial with accompanying videos.
