Have you thought about using Pantone’s 2018 color of the year Ultraviolet but were not sure it was for you? I didn’t think it was for me at all and then I proved myself wrong. Here are a few tips to discover if this is a color you can use and how you can use it.

Tip 1:Take an Ultraviolet Inventory

Whether you are scrapbooking or working in your art journal, you may be using a color and not realize it. When Pantone Announced the color of the year was Ultraviolet, I swore that I rarely used purple in my work. However, as I flipped through my art journal pages and scrapbook layouts, I saw that varying shades of purple appeared again and again.I mostly use it as a highlight, but on a few projects, purple ( and often Ultraviolet) took center stage. Take a look through your work to see whether or not you use Ultraviolet and how you use it. You might just be surprised. Knowing how you use it will help you on future projects when it comes time to select your supplies.

Tip 2: Gather your Ultraviolet Stash and Make a Kit

Once again, I swore I didn’t have Ultraviolet in my stash. After all, I wasn’t using purple right? After seeing that is did appear on my pages, I wanted to know just how much of my supplies were some shade of purple. I gathered anything I could find: cloth, thread, ink, paint, paper, ribbon and tape. The results were quite interesting. I had a nice sampling of Ultraviolet and varying shades of purple throughout my stash.I realized I could easily create with purple and that maybe I might be a closet Ultraviolet fan after all.

Tip 3: Create with Purpose and Embrace the Color

Ultraviolet might not be my favorite color, but why not make something with it anyway. I have considered it a challenge for myself. In my case, it is usually a highlight color to compliment my favorite go to palettes. I am making a conscious effort to use it more frequently and let it dominate the palette a bit more often. In many ways, I feel like a little life and a refreshed attitude have been breathed back into my work.

This portrait features several shades of purple, including ultraviolet. I have been continuing my efforts to improve my portrait drawings. I signed up for a second year of  Let’s Face It. This drawing is based upon those lessons. I usually don’t work with pastels but I do love the way this one turned out.
