Sometimes you just need to be creative without having to think too hard about what the end result will be. Prompt 5 of the Stencilfied Journal project calls for the use of stencils to create a mirror image. It’s a prompt that sits on the line between complex and simple. Given my busy schedule, I chose to go for simple creative play.
Tips for Creating a Mirror Image on your Art Journal Page
Creating a mirror image is really a simple exercise.
- Divide the paper in half. Whether you choose to divide it horizontally or vertically is up to you. Consider the size of the page and the stencils you want to use to help make the decision.
- Follow one simple rule: whatever you do on one side of that dividing line, you repeat on the other.
- The complexity of anything we create is often in the details. Add little bits here and there until you feel the piece is finished.
My art journal page is pretty simple and was finished in less than an hour( it would have been done faster if not for waiting on the paint to dry). I went into creating the page without expectations with my focus set on just enjoying the act of creating something.

If you are new to art journaling, you might have the expectation that each page you create is full of deep meaning or emotion. Though some pages might be, many of them are just about creatively playing with art supplies. Allowing yourself the freedom to play and enjoy the process can spark ideas for other projects. If you are busy, set a timer (I gave myself an hour) and just start creating. Use a single prompt as a guide so that you don’t have to think too much. My finished page isn’t what I would call gallery worthy, however, it did allow me to practice my creativity and find time to relax a little during a busy day.
