I love a little bit of subtle shimmer on my layouts. I usually add it by using a spray mist, however, after hearing so many wonderful things about Silks Acrylic Glaze, I wanted to give it a try. I received three colors in one of my Frog Dog Studio Mixed Media kits: Fern, African Jade and Carmen.
I was immediately drawn to the African Jade. The name of the color is a bit misleading. Though you might expect it to be green, this particular Silks glaze is more of a turquoise color. It’s perfect for a beach themed project or even a project about a cold winter day. I used it to create a layout with foam stamps for an article at Get It Scrapped.
The paint glides easily onto the paper. Though the jar is small, a little seems to go a long way. It has a translucent quality which covers the canvas heavily in some spots but lighter in others. It does dry quickly once it’s on the paper. As I worked with the stamps, I found it necessary to reapply a bit of paint in some areas. The paint itself has a subtle shimmer which is best seen in person. It remains glossy, even when dry.
Pros of Silks Acrylic Glaze
Easy to work with.
Has a glossy finish with a subtle shimmer which adds beautiful depth to painted projects.
Dries quickly( which may be a con depending upon what you are trying to accomplish)
Easy to clean up after. A little soap and water were all that was needed to clean my brush and stamps.
Cons of Silks Acrylic Glaze
I can’t think of one, other than that I only own three colors.
I don’t really have a negative thing to say about the Silk’s Acrylic Glaze. I can see why so many artists are raving about it. When using this product, it’s important to remember that it is a glaze paint which means it is designed to be a bit translucent. Understanding this will help you identify which types of projects you may want to use it for. I think it’s perfect for adding subtle shimmer to scrapbook layouts.
