When I first received the Deflecto chair mat, I had visions of decorating it for my creative space. Unfortunately, the mat was too large to fit into the closet that holds my desk. After doing a bit of thinking, we decided the mat might best be suited for my son. The carpet in the area of the room in which his desk is located is a bit worn. The floor mat would cover and protect the area as well as sprucing things up a bit. Of course, I now wanted to decorate the mat for my son.
The mat comes in a large roll. Prior to decorating it or placing it in your space, you should unroll it and allow it to flatten. You may need to weight down the edges. It only takes about an hour or so and you are ready to decorate.
I wanted to add a video game themed quote to the mat. My son has simpler tastes than I and he requested that I just add the word “gamer” to his new mat. I used a letter mask and then blocked off the area to form a rectangle around the word.
You can use any color of spray paint you wish, but you will need to make sure it is designed for use with plastic. My son chose gold. Make sure you use the paint in a well ventilated area. Once we sprayed the word, we allowed it to dry.
Overall, the masked off area created a nice, simple decoration for my son’s mat. You can of course use stencils or choose to have larger quotes. You will need patience with larger areas. I recommend doing each section or word in stages to allow it to dry thoroughly before spray painting the next word.
You can see that the mat is a good size and will definitely protect the carpet below it. At the same time, it adds a sleek, clean look to my son’s desk area.
