DIY Rustic Mandala Tray
When it comes to home decor, I have gotten particular. The combination of limited( and expensive) shopping while living in the Bahamas coupled with living a simplified expat lifestyle has ensured that I don’t bring just anything into my home. This is also a large reason why my current apartment is sparsely decorated. I have been looking for awhile to find just the right thing for the coffee table. A tray would be perfect to keep the remotes from wandering off. I just never quite found what I wanted.

I decided I wanted to challenge myself to create or decorate my own tray. I also liked the idea of upcycling something. About a month or so back, my husband got a large gamer mouse and mouse pad. I realized the box was the perfect size for a tray. The idea of using paper mache and customizing the box appealed to me and so, a project was born.

Choosing how I would decorate the box was another matter. I surfed Pinterest for ideas and settled upon a mandala design. I had seen several trays with white on a dark background and wanted to do the same. I also felt intimidated by the idea of creating my own mandala. The designs seemed so intricate. I was sure I would mess up. I settled on using a few stencils as a jump start and then added in some of my own free form drawing. You will get to see the creation of the mandala in detail within the video tutorial. As you watch, think about the color you might like to paint your own tray as well as whether or not you have any stencils that could serve as a jump start to your own mandala tray project.

The Paper mache tray is perfect for any coffee table
The tray is by no means perfect but I am happy with the result. My husband thought I had bought a tray and brought it home. I learned a lot and may tackle future paper mache tray projects in an effort to better organize my apartment. Using the stencils to aide me with the mandala design made creating mandalas so much easier. It allows you to break down a mandala into parts rather than just seeing the whole of the design, making it easier to create. As a result, you may see more mandalas in my art journal posts.
