For a long time, I didn’t get the hype about the Harry Potter series. My son didn’t seem interested, so I never forced the issue. Then an online book club I was participating in decided to have a Harry Potter month. All of the books were fair game. My son decided he wanted me to read the books with him and that’s how our love of Harry Potter began.
Though I wouldn’t call us super fans, we have watched all of the movies. We’re currently anticipating the next film, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. While we wait, we decided to get into the spirit by reading some of the books from the world of Harry Potter. Instead of rereading the series, we opted to try a few different books. Books that you might not even realize existed if you weren’t necessarily on the lookout for them. These 4 books share another side to the magical world of Harry Potter.
All of the books we have chosen to read this month are comprised of short stories. With homeschool and the holidays coming up, we know we are going to be busy. Short stories allow us to take in parts Potter’s magical realm without having to commit to a full book. We like that there is no pressure to finish everything before we see the new movie at the end of the month. It’s perfect for us to fit into our schedule here and there( especially since my son’s literature classes are stacked this month).
We chose to start with the Tales of Beedle the Bard. It’s often referenced in many of the Harry Potter series. We’re a couple of stories in and enjoying it so far. Think along the line of fairy tales for young wizards. The short stories are quick fun reads.
We have not decided which of these books to read next. They are all on our list and have been for months now. Each of these features more short stories all written by J.K. Rowling. Some of the stories delve deeper into characters from the Harry Potter series.

My sister and family are currently in California visiting Hogworts, so my FB feed is full of photos and shared memories. We read all the books, haven’t watched the movies but have enjoyed some of the background books and short stories.
We saw the Harry Potter area at Universal in Orlando when it opened. Wish we could have explored it a bit more.
