I had a few concerns when prompt 6 of the stencilfied journal project was revealed. What was the best way to put a hole in your art journal and how would the integrity of the page hold up, especially if I added more than one hole? With a little planning, I was able to work some holes into the design without weakening the structure of the page.
Are your Ready to Put a Hole in Your Art Journal Page?
There are a few things to consider before putting a hole in your art journal page.
- Consider adhering 2 pages of your art journal together if the pages are thin. This will help reinforce them.
- If using a paper punch, test it on a scrap paper first to ensure it will punch through the layers. Some punches work better than others.
- If your book is thick, fold it open so that you can place the punch on the table. Stand up when using the punch. This will allow you to use a little more force when you punch the hole. I didn’t do this in the video and my first punched hole was a disaster!
- The page beneath the punched hole will be partially revealed. Consider which parts of the design you wish to showcase and plan your art journal page around it.

There are multiple ways to put a hole in your art journal page. Regardless of whether or not you use a punch or other means to add holes, reinforcing the page is always a good idea.
