Today marks the beginning of a wonderful art collaboration between myself and my friend Jana Oliveira (With2Worlds.org). Jana is a very talented artist whose work ranges from the digital realm to paper and paint. We both love to art journal, and though we often think alike, there are times when we come at an idea from two totally different perspectives. In many ways, I find this challenges me to step out of my comfort zone. I have learned a lot from Jana by trying to see her side of things which brings me to our goal with this project. Dual Imaginations is all about creating art based on one prompt or set of supplies. We can each take that prompt into any direction. Our unique perspective is what makes the art an individual effort. We inspire and learn from each other, sparking the urge to create more art. We hope that the feeling is mutual and that you learn from and are inspired by us.
Our first prompt was inspired by the sea. Jana created a beautiful digital kit full of mermaids! I chose to work with a few of the die cuts from the kit as well as to use the mermaid brush.If you would like to play along or create your own hybrid mermaid art journal page, you can download Jana’s kit here.
Using a digital kit helps guide some of my choices. I had a set color palette to work with and found it easy to grab supplies to coordinate with the kit. If you are not confident in your drawing skills or are short on time, using a digital kit provides a starting point. In this video, I show how the mermaid brush provided the starting point for my mermaid.
Using the brush as my starting point helped me make quick work of this art journal page. I have to admit, I am now a bit addicted to creating mermaids and have dedicated an art journal to fill up with them.
