Creating a Non-Traditional Valentine’s Day Layout

Valentine’s day is over and it’s time to get those memories documented. Sometimes, though, those papers and embellishments full of frilly lace and lots of pink just aren’t the right supplies for the job. What should you do? Go the route of creating a non-traditional Valentine’s Day Layout. Theme your page based on a special gift!

For Valentine’s Day, we bought my son a dancing baby Groot. I snapped some photos of my husband surprising him on Valentine’s day morning. The usual themed Valentine’s day papers just didn’t seem to fit. Guardians of the Galaxy themed papers were not an option, so I chose to work with a color palette based on Groot: browns and greens. I did add in some pink, teal and a few hearts. The heart motif is a nod toward the holiday.

You don’t have to scrap a particular holiday using themed holiday papers. When you want to make a page meaningful but work with that event, try the following:

-Base your page around a particular gift or event from that day. Choose colors ( and sometimes even textures or patterns)that will compliment that gift or event. I used green patterned paper, a kraft brown bag and a floral print paper to represent that Groot is plant like.

-Try to include one motif or color that represents the holiday somewhere on your page. On my layout, I included hearts and added small pops of pink.

-Choose one or two items that contrast with the chosen colors and may be unexpected. I used pops of teal and chose a graphic black and white polka dot print. Both keep the page fun without leaning too heavily on the plant theme I based my layout around.

Creating a non-traditional Valentine’s day page was the best way to tell this story.

The dancing baby Groot was a fun and unexpected gift. Creating a non-traditional Valentine’s day page was the best way to tell this story. While there is nothing wrong with traditional Valentine’s day papers, you don’t have to limit yourself to using them when it comes to documenting your own memories. Long story short- don’t be afraid to step outside the box when it comes to a special day.
